Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta – Held October each Year

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, one of the most photographed celebrations in the world, takes place each year over several fun-filled days in October. The colorful festival began in 1972 and has grown to include several main events and draws thousands of spectators and participants.
Popular events include Dawn Patrol, Mass Ascensions, Special Shape Rodeo, Artistic Vision and Balloon Glow. The Mass Ascensions event includes two waves of balloons, hundreds in each wave, lifting off at once. Dawn Patrol pilots are particularly skilled and fly using technology before daylight, giving other balloonists an idea of what the weather conditions hold for their daily flights. The Special Shape Rodeo features odd shaped balloons that mimic soda cans, animals, vehicles, and always provide a bit of humor for festival attendees. Balloon Glows are particularly spectacular as they occur well after dark with craft standing on the ground and burners fully aglow. This provides a rare close-up view of the powerful burners that inflate and lift the beautiful aircraft. The Artistic Vision is an event designed for artists who wish to capture these amazing examples of airborne beauty in various media.
The sights and sounds of colorful hot air balloons soaring overhead with burners firing, engine-free, is truly a unique experience. Vendor booths are in abundance and everyone is welcome to enjoy Albuquerque’s most famous celebration
