Margarita Heaven in Santa Fe – Zia Diner Margarita Drink Menu

The story of where and when the Margarita was invented is definitely in dispute. Some say it was invented in northern Mexico at the Rancho La Gloria Hotel by Carlos “Danny Herrera, for a retired Ziefeld dancer, Marjorie King.  Herrera, and another bartender Albert Hernandez, that made the Margarita popular where he worked at the La Plaza restaurant in La Jolla, California according to the story have a special Margarita connection. Mr. Hernandez professed that Mr. Morris Locke, the owner of La Plaza, went to Mexico quite a bit and knew Mr. Herrera, the inventor of the Margarita.

The story most acknowledged as to who invented the Margarita is that it was created by bartender Don Carlos Orozco at Hussong’s Cantina in Ensendada, Mexico. According to “Margarita” inventor legend Mr. Orozco was bartending one slow afternoon experimented mixing new drinks. Suddenly a visitor arrived named Magarita Henkel, a German amabassador’s daughter, the wife of Roy Parodi, that lived in nearby Rancho Hamilton. As the story goes, Mr. Orozco handed the drink to Mrs. Parodi, naming it the “Margarita” after her because she was the first person to give the drink a try. The drink recipe he invented included tequila, orange liqueur and lime in a glass rimmed with salt on the rocks.
